Hamburg is Germany's musical capital: five big theatres play almost all year round – from the harbour classic to brand-new premieres. Here is what's on, how to get there, where to stay and how to turn your show night into a whole weekend.

What's on where? (as of November 2026)

Most shows are performed in German.

Stage Theater im Hafen – Disney's “The Lion King”

The long-runner on the other side of the Elbe. Take the S1, S3 or U3 to Landungsbrücken, then the musical shuttle boat from Pier 1. The HADAG shuttle crossing is included in your musical ticket; boats start about two hours before the show (about 1.5 hours for matinees) and run until about 1.5 hours after the curtain.

Stage Theater an der Elbe – “MJ – The Michael Jackson Musical”

In Hamburg since December 2024, right next to the Theater im Hafen – so you also take the shuttle from Landungsbrücken, Pier 1. Shows usually run Tuesday to Sunday, with matinees at weekends.

Stage Operettenhaus – “Back to the Future”, later “TINA”

Right on the Reeperbahn (Spielbudenplatz), reached by U3 to St. Pauli or S-Bahn to Reeperbahn. According to Hamburg Tourism, “Back to the Future – The Musical” runs here until February 2027, followed by “TINA – The Tina Turner Musical” from April 2027. During Advent, the family show “Weihnachten mit Bibi & Tina” is also on.

Stage Theater Neue Flora – “The Devil Wears Prada”

Hamburg's largest musical theatre on Stresemannstraße in Altona gets the next big premiere: “The Devil Wears Prada – The Musical” starts previews on 3 December 2026, with the premiere on 10 December 2026. The nearest station is S-Bahn Holstenstraße (S2, S5, S7).

Theater am Großmarkt – “Moulin Rouge! The Musical”

The Theater am Großmarkt (formerly Mehr! Theater) in Hammerbrook shows “Moulin Rouge! The Musical”: previews since 28 October 2026, premiere on 5 November 2026. It's about 800 metres on foot from S-Bahn Hammerbrook or U1 Steinstraße.

Tickets: what to keep in mind

  • Buy from official sellers: the theatre or established ticket shops – not classified ads or unknown resale sites.
  • Prices vary: depending on day, time and category, seats cost very different amounts – weekdays and outer categories are usually cheaper. You'll see the current price in the ticket shop.
  • Premiere rush: for new shows like “Moulin Rouge!” and “The Devil Wears Prada”, the first weeks are in high demand – if you're flexible, good seats are easier to find a few weeks later.

Where to stay

  • Harbour musicals (The Lion King, MJ): St. Pauli, Landungsbrücken or Neustadt – the shuttle brings you back, and your hotel is only minutes away.
  • Operettenhaus: around the Reeperbahn and St. Pauli – lively, but noisy at weekends. For a quieter night, try Neustadt or the Alster area.
  • Neue Flora: Altona and Ottensen, a short S-Bahn ride away.
  • Theater am Großmarkt: the main station area, St. Georg or Hammerbrook – ideal if you arrive by train.

Tip: ticket first, then hotel – and book with free cancellation if you can.

Getting to Hamburg

By train you arrive at the Hauptbahnhof right in the city centre; from there, every theatre is about 15 minutes away by S-Bahn or U-Bahn. If you drive, pick a hotel with parking – the theatres have car parks, but traffic and parking costs usually make public transport the easier choice.

Make it a weekend

  • Harbour cruise from Landungsbrücken – perfect before a harbour show.
  • Speicherstadt and the Elbphilharmonie Plaza: walk through the World Heritage warehouse district and enjoy the view over the port.
  • Miniatur Wunderland in the Speicherstadt – book a time slot in advance.
  • Fish market in Altona on Sunday morning – for early birds after the show.

As of 1 November 2026. Venues and dates according to Hamburg Tourism, hamburg.de and Eventim. Shows, runs and performance times may change – the details at ticket purchase are what count.
